French, 1869- 1954. Albert André was a Post-Impressionist figurative painter. He is famous for his portraits of Claude Monet and his close friend Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His works often featured gardens, still lifes, and interiors. Like his colleague Pierre Bonnard, André was famous for juxtaposed pieces for vibrant colors that depicted light. Albert André was born in 1869 in the city of Lyon in France. The artist initially learned to design silk patterns. He was a draftsman and a textile designer. The artist went to Paris in 1889 to study at the Académie Julian. In Paris, he got acquainted with artists Georges d'Espagnat, Louis Valtat, and Paul Ranson. Albert André was also associated with the Les Nabis group, including Signac, Marquet, Vuillard, Vallotton, Denis, and Bonnard.
The artist in 1894 exhibited his five paintings at the Salon des Indépendants. Here his paintings garnered the attention of prominent Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Over the years, Renoir supported the young artist by guiding and helping André sell his artworks. Many of Albert André's paintings for sale featuring Renoir and his family garner high prices at online auction. From 1895 to 1901, the painter also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Cent. Artwork depicting domestic life is also sought-after Albert André's art for sale. Post World War I, André started working as a curator for the Bagnois-sur-Cèze museum and worked there until 1947. In 1947 the painter returned to Paris and stayed there until his death on July 11, 1954.
Today, Albert André’s works are on display at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, museums based in Washington DC and Philadelphia, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
