Adolph Artz

Dutch, 1837–1890. David Adolph Constant Artz, popular as Adolph Artz, was a well-known 19th-century painter. The artist was also a collector and was famous for his association with the Hague School. Between 1855 to 1864, Adolph Artz underwent training with artists, such as Louis Royer and J.H. Egenberger at the Amsterdam Academie. At the Amsterdam Academie Artz got acquainted with Jozef Israëls. Israëls' fishing subjects had a lasting inspiration for Artz's art. The artist worked with Israëls in 1859 in Zandvoort. Adolph Artz's work often depicted cheerful versions of the fisherman's life, unlike Israëls's work which featured grim and happy moments.

The artist was also a member of the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1855 to 1864. The artist's paintings also depicted the distinctive use of bright colors and sharp outlines. From 1866 to 1874, the painter set up his studio in Paris. Here he established close acquaintance with this colleagues Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer and Jacob Maris. The vivid collector also got closer to Goupil & Cie- a well-known art dealer. During these years, Adolph Artz created paintings of Japanese subjects and scenes of fashionable genre. The artist retreated to The Hague in 1874, where he became part of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij. The artist also received the Order of the Oak Crown from William III of the Netherlands in 1879.
