It has been a common practice since Tudor times to use boards when playing backgammon and checkers. Apart from a few exceptions, tables made specifically for games came into being only after Charles II restored the English monarchy in 1660. There was a growth in the popularity of game tables in the 17th and 18th Centuries, characterized by fine inlay work, marquetry detailing, and ornate designs. Early 18th Century antique card tables, also known as antique game tables with figured walnut or oyster veneering, were designed in the Queen Anne style. Cabriole legs supported the top when open and had carved decorations such as shell patterns adorning them. In the mid-17th century, a concertina mechanism was introduced to extend the back legs and frame of games tables fitted with one hinged back leg. A candlestick recess was provided in the dished recesses on the tops, as well as a counter well for the placement of coins or counters. Game tables didn't become a household necessity until the Regency period and Victorian period, making them an important piece of furniture. As a result, cabinetmakers in Victorian times produced a variety of unusual designs, such as the envelope card table.
