The English Country House interior has long been admired worldwide. Interior designers, decorators and collectors alike admire the timeless elegance of its look and style. Our specially curated auction of original paintings encapsulates all those tastes in art that traditionally are associated with the English Country House.
The English gentleman and his wife would usually inherit their home and its furnishings and traditionally family portraits would look down from their walls upon guests as they dined and relaxed at home. The gentleman would more often than not enjoy country sporting pursuits such as hunting, racing, shooting and fishing and it was often said during the 18th and 19th centuries that a gentleman would happily pay double when commissioning a portrait of his favorite hunter or dog, than for his wife or children!
Naturally, their home would showcase their love of travel on the Continent and with the popularity of the Grand Tour, undertaken especially by young gentleman, European souvenirs would start to fill the walls to showcase a gentleman's broad and extensive travels. Old Master landscapes, mythological and religious masterpieces were brought back from tours of Italy, France as well as Holland, Austria and Germany.
It was during the Victorian era that the popularity of Scotland as a travel destination soared and a large number of English country house owners also enjoyed a Scottish sporting estate or hunting lodge - and so this taste too became popular for their walls back home to showcase their love of the Scottish landscape.
Be it ancestral portraits, Old Masters from Grand Tour travels or portraits of favorite horses, the English Country House interior has lived on and survived fashions and fads and still remains today a most sought after and impressive look for many worldwide. We are honored to bring you just a small but select offering of such paintings that each in their way reflect that heritage and tradition.
