Auction Description

Fine Art & Antiques by Simpson Galleries
Celebrating a generational tradition of selecting notable examples of paintings, fine furniture, Asian textiles, sterling silver metalwork, glazed ceramics, drawings, bronze wildlife and figural sculptures, abstract expressionist prints, diamond jewelry, and with a specialty in regional Texas art; Simpson Galleries takes pride in curating each lot. In this catalog you will discover a world of history. Selected for their rarity and timeless quality you will find curiosities including Scythian style gold metalwork ornaments, 18th century portraiture, Qing Dynasty sterling silver, Orientalist landscapes, and Western paintings. On the block will be the lifelong estate of Texas philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones, (proceeds to benefit the Houston Food Bank). Jesse H. Jones (1874-1956) was a Houston based politician, entrepreneur, publisher, and banker. A true "Texas Tycoon," his business savvy was likely a lifesaver for his employees during the Great Depression. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones were well documented philanthropists having donated to colleges and universities intending to aid students in need, including women and people of color, and establishing the Houston Endowment in 1937; the estate of Drs. E. Wiley and Gloria C. Biles, (proceeds to benefit Houston Baptist University). The Biles were avid travelers, design enthusiasts, and dedicated members of the Houston community. Drs. Wiley and Gloria collected a variety of modern artwork, sculptures, and notable mid-century furniture; a Western art collection from a South Florida collector; and a strong selection of American art. Highlights include a smoldering, sailboat filled waterscape by Felix Francois Georges Philibert Ziem, one of the last great French orientalist artists; a porcelain mounted exotic wood bonheur du jour; and a David Webb designed 18K gold cuff.
