Auction Description

The Estate of Eileen Ball - Part 2 Online Only by Dovetail Auctions
Eileen Ball’s appreciation for antiques grew form her natural curiosity of history. She never put any limits on what she collected and simply followed her heart. While some collectors were focusing on obtaining specific examples in order to grow an organized group, her collection was for her studies alone. As her interests grew, so did her resources, and her resources was not her available cash, but her collections, which she studied. Eileen moved to Bucks County in 1957, a time when refinished American colonial was in fashion. She was not drawn to the clean finishes of the time, however, and focused on form and rarity, always building her knowledge. Broken and dirty had no less value to her than whole and cleaned if it told her something new. She was never a dealer. She enjoyed barn sales, auctions, and dusty antique shops. She always got along very well with dealers who, at first meeting, seemed the least personable. Like her, they were able to relate, sometimes better, to the people who lived before us and the objects they left behind for us. Just as her deep love of animals drew her to people who might get along better with a dog than a person, her friends in the antique business were chosen the way she might chose the antiques themselves. She could see through the old finish to the true worth beneath. She had the mutual respect of the many dealers of her time and had no interest in small talk. Her favorite subjects of study were textiles, ceramics, country furniture, and farm tools. If you met her on the auction floor or in front of a box lot in the last 50 years, you might recall that little dark haired lady directing the auctioneer to pull out one particular, apparently insignificant, item. Another quiet victory, of which she had so many. Read more
