April 12, 2021 - Rafael Osona kicks off the 2022 season with his annual Daffodil Weekend Auction. During a three day in-person exhibition, the collection is presented in a gallery setting. The full catalog may be viewed online.
Lot 387, Vintage Bruno Mathsson Pernilla Lounge Chair and Stool, for Dux Sweden
Bruno Mathsson’s and Hans Wegner’s mid-century modern lines are presented against classics by American designer Jeffrey Bilhuber. The 600 lot auction includes fine art, furniture, rugs and décor, folk art, South Sea pearls and American, Continental and Asian antiques.
Lot 49, Swedish Gustavian Cupboard in Lime Washed Finish, 19th Century
Period Gustavian furniture models characteristic restraint, as does a Louis Phillipe marble top chest of drawers, 19th century, that shines with neoclassical moderation.
Nantucket is a renowned source for 18th & 19th century American furniture treasures, but equally esteemed is the work of the island’s 20th century craftsman, Stephen Swift, whose bench made hardwood furniture is exceedingly difficult to find.
An impressive American Sheraton Inlaid Cherry Chest of Drawers, circa 1820, is all dressed out with outset cookie corners and brass rosettes above reeded stiles that flank four bird’s eye maple and cross-banded drawers, complete with thistle post and bail pulls, and a chevron banded skirt.
Lot 173, Large Bernard Woodman Hand Crafted Sailor's Valentine
There’s a strong showing of heirloom Nantucket baskets, and coveted jewelry by Island goldsmiths, plus 19th century French coquille figures, sailor’s valentines and other shellwork.
A Hungerford’s Pasture Texas Landscape by Rackstraw Downes stands out among fine art offerings while Nantucket collectors will be drawn to a modernist interpretation of Nantucket’s fabled ‘Three Bricks’ on Main Street; the three identical 19th century mansions were built by the island’s wealthiest ship builder for his three sons.
Twelve Intaglio Mezzotint Engravings from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s Pytanthoza Iconographia (Regensburg 1737-1745) the plates created from watercolors by Georg Ehret are sure to receive attention while seascapes, working harbors, ship portraits, coastal scenes, and genre paintings being offered span various periods of art history; most from the 19th century through the impressionist and 20th century movements.
