After the photography department's excellent performance in 2019 - which established Finarte as the leader auction house for photography in Italy - we are excited to announce the next sale scheduled for Tuesday, March 17th.
The auction catalogue (256 lots) presents a clear international vocation, always with particular attention to Italian artists, ranging in works from the 1930s and 1940s to the contemporary.
Lot 2, Paolo Santambrogio (1978), Luca Argentero, 2017, Digital Print; Estimate €300 - €500
The proceeds of the sale of first two lots, portraits of two famous Italian showmen, Luca Argentero and Giorgio Pasotti, will be devolved to a charity: the CUORE E PAROLE ONLUS. The association manages a newly opened venue dedicated to adolescents, and in particular to the prevention and contrast of youth discomfort, depression, and poverty.
The catalogue continues with a selection of great masters of the Italian landscape, such as Olivo Barbieri and Massimo Vitali. Noteworthy lots are indeed, Lot 3 Zurich, estimate € 2,000 - 2,500 by Franco Fontana and Lot 8 the suggestive view of Rome (estimate € 3,600 - 4,000) by Gabriele Basilico.
Also, worthy of attention is a lovely group of works by Mario Giacomelli, among which is Lot 31, Nudi, self-portrait in a family environment (estimate € 5,000 - 7,000).
Starting from Lot 53 a series of grand international names: from Wolfgang Tillmans to Nobuyoshi Araki, from Nan Goldin to the beautiful and provocative Serrano (Lot 62, The Rubble, estimate € 12,000 - 18,000), passing through Steve McCurry with the cover to the catalogue (Lot 55, Shaolin Monks on The Wall, estimate € 2,000 - 3,000).
The central part of the catalogue features a series of works that are hardly offered on the Italian market. Interesting is the set of photos by Peter Beard that culminates with a unique piece: Lot 63, Spitting Cobra Tsavo, estimate € 18,000 - 22,000.
Many are the other great authors of American photography among which the master of colour, William Eggleston, that after the great success in the spring auction is present here with three lots emblematic of his production, Gregory Crewdson, with the monumental Untitled (House in the road), and also William Klein and Ansel Adams.
Lot 91 is a real pearl: a unique print of Shirin Neshat with its hand-painted veil, from the Women of Allah series (estimate € 8,000 - 10,000). Finally, Sebastiao Salgado, Lot 97: for the first time, one of his works of this format and this value is presented on the Italian market (Buffalo, Kafue National Park, estimate € 9,000 - 11,000). At auction, also a work by the other great exponent of Brazilian Photography, Vik Muniz. The majestic Eruption of Vesuvius, after Sebastian Pether, Lot 193, is a real rarity (estimate € 10,000 - 12,000).
Lot 198, Pino Settanni (1949-2010) - Mr Pop ama gli aquiloni a Kabul, 2007; Estimate €700 - €1,000
Ideally close this international section, four prints by Thomas Ruff, from his iconic Substrat series (Lot 198, estimate € 15,000 - 18,000).
The top lot of the auction is Lot 119: 33 chromogenic prints by Luigi Ghirri, Modena, from the "KM 0.250" series (estimate € 30,000 - 40,000).
Beautiful works by Italian authors are also two rare series of vintage prints by Luigi Veronesi (Lot 151, estimate € 6,500 - 9,000 and Lot 152, estimate € 5,000 - 8,000) and two impressive C-prints by Claudio Abate, who captures works by Anselm Kiefer and Mario Merz (Lots 125 and 126, estimate € 4,500 - 5,500 each).
