An Important Baltimore Collection Comes to Alex Cooper

Alex Cooper will be auctioning selections from the private collection of William F. Lucas, Jr., and the Lucas Family of Baltimore. Important pieces from the family collections have been donated to the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum and sold at previous auctions. Alex Cooper is bringing to auction an important collection of medals, many from Victor David Brenner, a stately sterling dresser set, and a lovely selection of art.

Lot 678, "1817" James Monroe Indian Peace Medal; Estimate $300-$500

Brenner’s work is remarkable because he is an artist who has more than 500 billion examples of their work in daily use having designed the Lincoln Cent in 1909 at the request of Teddy Roosevelt. Brenner made dozens of medals that today reside in some of the finest museums in the world, including Baltimore’s own Walter’s Art Museum. The February 6th Gallery Auction offers eleven examples of Brenner’s work, including his famous Henry of Prussia Medal, which was awarded to the Prince during his visit in 1902. The collection also features medals by his mentor, Oscar Roty - there are also two historically significant Indian Peace Medals. The sterling dresser set, lot 434, will also be offered during the Thursday auction and include important monogrammed pieces.

The Saturday, February 8th auction will also present selections from the William F. Lucas Collection of Paintings. Highlights include a gorgeous oil on panel by Alexander-Marie Guillemin, lot 1054, and an impressive pastoral landscape by John Robinson Tait, lot 1055. Baltimore artist Richard Caton Woodville appears with a compelling lithograph “Waiting for the Stage,” lot 1061.
